Decisions Decisions!--> please help me!

Hey hair lovers!

So I'm having a mini dilemma, this week is my relaxer week and I don't know what to do. Should I do it myself or should I listen to everybody else's advice about going to a hairdresser?

I really wanted to do this myself but there are problems with this option.

Problems: 1. My flat iron is in the US because my friend seems to not have the time to mail it back to me.
                  2. I don't have a hooded dryer.

The problems with going to a salon are:

                   1. I don't want them to use small combs in my hair
                   2. I don't think combs are washed regularly at salons (I kinda have a little OCD )
                   3. I don't want them trying to persuade me to cut my hair.
                   4. Sometimes they spread the relaxer to the ends of the hair. Not good.
                   5. I may have to bring my own products like heat protectant (idk if they use it)

Obviously there are a lot of problems with salons, but at the same time what am I gonna look like with my relaxed roots and natural-ish ends ?

I don't know what to do but I need to make a decision before next Saturday because I want it done by then. Next Sunday is my boyfriend's birthday and when I see him I wanna look good ^_^.

If you have an opinion about what I should do, please leave a comment. I could use a little help.

Thanks for reading!

okay first thing first -- it's YOUR HAIR! Keep that in mind.

Weigh the pros and cons of each option:

Relaxing your hair yourself:
- It's a chemical process, and you have to move quickly and ensure you don't go past the new growth.
- Have you ever self-relaxed before? If not, and you want to look good for a special occasion, maybe this shouldn't be the time to experiment

Going to a salon:
- Finding a hairdresser who knows what she's doing is HARD!
- Stylists can be pricey

But I must say to you, if you're going to a salon and spending YOUR good good money on YOUR good good hair.........hello! You have to get what YOU want and ensure that the hairdresser doesn't do anything to damage your hair.

- Sooooo.......tell your hairdresser (in a nice, non-bitchy tone of course), "Look, I had a really bad experience with a stylist before who relaxed all the way down to the ends. It left my hair damaged and I have to cut it off. I've just started getting my hair back to it's healthy stage..." ---- You just want her to know that she only needs to go to the new growth. Nothing more!

- Anyway, personally, I rarely go to my hairdresser. She's great, but I can't keep up with spending money on a hairdresser every week. So I go to her for relaxers only.

- If you need a recommendation, you can try Julie's at Clock Tower Plaza in Half Way Tree. She uses Affirm Fiber Guard relaxer (which I love) and products from KeraCare, Dudleys and Design Essentials. A relaxer should be around $3,000-$4,000 (I dunno what your budget is). Her number is 860-2186.

- When you can though, save up and get that hooded dryer. It'll save you tons on visiting a salon once you get the hang of roller-setting. And ditch the flat iron -- you don't need it dear. Flat irons = damaged, weak hair!

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the good advice and the recommendation :) trust me I appreciate it.

I sorta self relaxed hmm ....nah my friend put the cream in and then I dealt with the rest. I was planning to ask my mother to put it in for me this time. I will see if my mother has the money to pay for it.I know I should really save for the dryer but I'm just thinking that I will have to have two sets of stuff (for the US and Jamaica). That's a lot of money to spend. I may just have one in the US and try to find people with dryers out here or something even though it may be a little inconvenient.if mommy's pocket is in agreement I'll definitely check out Clock Tower.thanks for the help!

I think relaxers (any chemicals really) are best left to professionals.  HOWEVER! if you don't have a trusted, knowledgeable stylist, I think you should take matters into your own hands.  I've had serious damage at the hands of a so-called professional and began to self-relax for a few months.  I finally found my current stylist who does a much better job than I ever could, but at least I never overprocessed my hair or damaged my scalp.  So I say...salon if you have consulted and trust the person, self-relax if you'd be going to a practical stranger.

I think you should go to the stylist. Just make sure you are veerry clear about what you want. Take your own products and combs if you have to... IT'S YOUR HAIR!!

Well I have salons that friends/family trust, but then again none of them are on a hair journey or believe my hair will grow (except probably my mommy).

this is gonna be a hard decision cuz i've been working so hard on my hair and i dont want anybody setting me back....

thnx for ur input, i will think about it :)
